Sources of PARAM Problems

Common Problems Opening PARAM Files

CASTEP Not Present

You attempt to load your PARAM file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PARAM File Extension". Customarily, this means that CASTEP is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your PARAM with CASTEP, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have CASTEP installed, and you know of another program to open your PARAM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

CASTEP is Out-of-Date

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of CASTEP installed that's incompatible with your CASTEP Parameters Data type. If you do not have the proper version CASTEP (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Investigate your PARAM file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Conclusion: The majority of PARAM file opening issues are due to not having the correct CASTEP version installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening PARAMs

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of CASTEP will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PARAM files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:

  • PARAM file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the PARAM file in the Windows registry
  • Defective install of a PARAM program, such as CASTEP
  • PARAM file corruption
  • Malware-tainted PARAM file can't be opened
  • Hardware associated with PARAM has outdated drivers
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open CASTEP Parameters Data files
