PCE Troubleshooting

Typical PCE Opening Challenges

Magic Engine Not Present

You attempt to load your PCE file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PCE File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Magic Engine missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your PCE file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Magic Engine is Out-of-Date

Your TurboGrafx-16 ROM file is incompatible with Magic Engine because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Open Source website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Magic Engine. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PCE file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Regardless, most of the PCE file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Magic Engine installed.

Other PCE File Opening Causes

Errors opening TurboGrafx-16 ROM files can still occur even with the latest Magic Engine software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening PCE files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:

  • Windows Registry PCE file paths that are incorrect
  • Deletion of the PCE file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Defective install of a PCE program, such as Magic Engine
  • Your PCE can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your PCE has adversely impacted by malware
  • Drivers associated with PCE software need to be updated
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your TurboGrafx-16 ROM file
