Sources of PHE Problems

Frequent PHE Opening Issues

WinChess Removed

If you attempt to load your PHE file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open PHE Files". When this happens, it is commonly due to WinChess missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens PHE files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Wrong Version of WinChess is Installed

Sometimes your installed version of WinChess won't support your WinChess Game Record file. If you do not have the proper version WinChess (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PHE file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Primarily, problems experienced when opening PHE files are due to having the incorrect version of WinChess installed on your computer.

Other PHE File Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of WinChess will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening PHE files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:

  • PHE file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PHE description
  • Invalid installation of a PHE-associated program (eg. WinChess)
  • Something has caused file corruption of your PHE
  • Your PHE is infected with malware
  • Drivers associated with PHE software need to be updated
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the WinChess Game Record format

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
