PID File Complications
Troubles Opening PID Files
Apple TextEdit Removed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PID Files" when trying to open your PID. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Apple TextEdit for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your PID because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another PID-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Apple TextEdit is Installed
Your Process ID File file is incompatible with Apple TextEdit because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Apple TextEdit version from the Apple website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PID file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PID files are due to having the wrong version of Apple TextEdit installed.
Additional PID Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening PID files even with the latest version of Apple TextEdit installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening PID files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for PID are wrong
- Deletion of the PID file description from the Registry by mistake
- Apple TextEdit or another PID application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your PID
- Malware-tainted PID file can't be opened
- Drivers associated with PID software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your Process ID File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
