PIM Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening PIM Files
Avid Pro Tools Removed
When you double-click your PIM file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Avid Pro Tools for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your PIM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens PIM files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Avid Pro Tools Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Avid Pro Tools installed that's incompatible with your Pro Tools Controller Plug-in Mappings File type. If you do not have the proper version Avid Pro Tools (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your Pro Tools Controller Plug-in Mappings File file was probably created by a newer release of Avid Pro Tools than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PIM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PIM files are due to having the wrong version of Avid Pro Tools installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening PIMs
You can still experience errors opening PIM files even with the latest version of Avid Pro Tools installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening PIM files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:
- PIM file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the PIM file description from the Registry by mistake
- Corrupt install of Avid Pro Tools or other PIM-related program
- Your PIM file is corrupted (issues with your Pro Tools Controller Plug-in Mappings File file itself)
- PIM file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PIM file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Pro Tools Controller Plug-in Mappings File file
