PLIST File Complications
Common Problems Opening PLIST Files
Microsoft Notepad Isn't There
When you double-click your PLIST file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your PLIST with Microsoft Notepad, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed, and you know of another program to open your PLIST file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Notepad
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Notepad installed that's incompatible with your Property List XML File type. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Notepad from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Your Property List XML File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PLIST file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Primarily, problems experienced when opening PLIST files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening PLISTs
You can still experience errors opening PLIST files even with the latest version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PLIST files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for PLIST are wrong
- The PLIST file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the PLIST format
- The PLIST itself is corrupted
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PLIST
- Hardware associated with PLIST has outdated drivers
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Property List XML File file
