Understanding PLK Issues

Common Problems Opening PLK Files

ATI Multimedia Center is Not Installed

Double-clicking your PLK file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open PLK File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have ATI Multimedia Center for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your PLK file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your PLK file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Wrong Version of ATI Multimedia Center is Installed

It is possible that your version of ATI Multimedia Center isn't able to open your AMD ATI Radeon Video Driver file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version ATI Multimedia Center (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your AMD ATI Radeon Video Driver file was created by a newer version of ATI Multimedia Center than you have on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of PLK file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Primarily, problems experienced when opening PLK files are due to having the incorrect version of ATI Multimedia Center installed on your computer.

Additional PLK Opening Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of ATI Multimedia Center will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening PLK files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • PLK file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Corruption of the PLK file description inside the Registry
  • Invalid installation of a PLK-associated program (eg. ATI Multimedia Center)
  • The PLK itself is corrupted
  • Your PLK is infected with malware
  • Hardware associated with PLK has outdated drivers
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the AMD ATI Radeon Video Driver format
