Troubleshooting Problems Opening PO Files

Issues Opening PO Files

Apache OpenOffice Isn't There

When trying to open your PO file, you get the error "Can't Open PO File Type". Customarily, this means that Apache OpenOffice is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your PO with Apache OpenOffice, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PO, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Outdated Apache OpenOffice

It is possible that your version of Apache OpenOffice isn't able to open your Portable Object file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Apache OpenOffice from Apache Software Foundation is recommended. Most of the time your Portable Object file was created by a newer Apache OpenOffice than what you have installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your PO, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Conclusion: The majority of PO file opening issues are due to not having the correct Apache OpenOffice version installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading PO Files

Assuming you have the right Apache OpenOffice version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PO files. If you are still having problems opening PO files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for PO
  • The PO file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Partial installation of Apache OpenOffice that did not fully complete
  • File corruption affecting your PO file
  • The PO is infected with a virus
  • PO-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Portable Object files

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
