PXM Troubleshooting

Troubles Opening PXM Files

Pixelmator Isn't There

When trying to open your PXM file, you get the error "Can't Open PXM File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Pixelmator for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When another PXM application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Obsolete Version of Pixelmator

It is possible that your version of Pixelmator isn't able to open your Pixelmator Image File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Pixelmator if you don't have the right version. Your Pixelmator Image File file was probably created by a newer release of Pixelmator than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: If you right-click on your PXM file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Regardless, most of the PXM file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Pixelmator installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening PXMs

Even with the correct version of Pixelmator installed, you can still experience difficulties opening PXMs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading PXM files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:

  • Invalid PXM file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Corruption of the PXM file description inside the Registry
  • Defective install of a PXM program, such as Pixelmator
  • Something has caused file corruption of your PXM
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your PXM
  • Hardware associated with PXM has outdated drivers
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Pixelmator Image File format
