REC Troubleshooting
Typical REC Opening Challenges
Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip Disappeared
You attempt to load your REC file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The REC File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your REC file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your REC file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Wrong Version of Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip is Installed
In other instances, your Topfield PVR Recording file version may not be supported by your version of Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip. If you do not have the proper version Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Topfield PVR Recording file version that was created by a newer version of Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of REC file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening REC files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading REC Files
Assuming you have the right Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening REC files. Other REC opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Other contributing causes:
- REC file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry REC description
- Partial installation of Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip that did not fully complete
- Your REC file is corrupted (issues with your Topfield PVR Recording file itself)
- Your REC has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your REC file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Topfield PVR Recording file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
