Sources of RIK Problems
Troubles Opening RIK Files
SharpMap Removed
You attempt to load your RIK file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The RIK File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have SharpMap for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another RIK-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Obsolete Version of SharpMap
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of SharpMap installed that's incompatible with your SharpMap File type. If you do not have the proper version SharpMap (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your SharpMap File file was probably created by a newer release of SharpMap than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your RIK, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Conclusion: The majority of RIK file opening issues are due to not having the correct SharpMap version installed.
Other RIK File Opening Causes
Assuming you have the right SharpMap version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening RIK files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading RIK files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:
- Windows Registry RIK file paths that are incorrect
- Corruption of the RIK file description inside the Registry
- SharpMap or another RIK application experienced a flawed installation
- Your RIK file is corrupted (issues with your SharpMap File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your RIK
- Hardware related to RIKs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the SharpMap File format
