Understanding RPG Issues

Issues Opening RPG Files

RPG Toolkit Disappeared

Double-clicking your RPG file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open RPG File". If so, it typically means that you don't have RPG Toolkit installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your RPG file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When another RPG application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Incorrect RPG Toolkit Version

Sometimes your installed version of RPG Toolkit won't support your Programming Language Source Code File file. If you do not have the proper version RPG Toolkit (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Programming Language Source Code File file was created by a different (newer) version of RPG Toolkit than what's installed.

Tip: If you right-click on your RPG file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Regardless, most of the RPG file opening problems relate to not having the right version of RPG Toolkit installed.

Other RPG File Opening Causes

Even with the correct version of RPG Toolkit installed, you can still experience difficulties opening RPGs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening RPG files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Invalid RPG file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • The RPG file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Defective install of a RPG program, such as RPG Toolkit
  • Your RPG file is corrupted (issues with your Programming Language Source Code File file itself)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your RPG
  • Hardware related to RPGs has device driver corruption
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Programming Language Source Code File file
