Understanding SCE Issues

Common SCE Opening Problems

Scilab Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open SCE Files" when trying to open your SCE. Customarily, this means that Scilab is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your SCE file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When another SCE application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Wrong Version of Scilab is Installed

In other instances, your Scilab Script file version may not be supported by your version of Scilab. Download the latest Scilab version from the Open Source website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of SCE file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening SCE files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Additional SCE Opening Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Scilab will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening SCE files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for SCE are wrong
  • The SCE file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Scilab or another SCE application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your SCE can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • The SCE is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your SCE file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Scilab Script files
