SGY Troubleshooting
Common SGY Opening Problems
Segpy Isn't There
Double-clicking your SGY file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open SGY File". When this happens, it is commonly due to Segpy missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your SGY file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Segpy installed, and you know of another program to open your SGY file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Segpy Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a SEG-Y Seismic Data File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Segpy (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your SGY file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening SGY files are due to having the wrong version of Segpy installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening SGYs
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Segpy will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening SGY files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for SGY are wrong
- The SGY file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Defective install of a SGY program, such as Segpy
- File corruption affecting your SGY file
- Past or present virus infection has affected your SGY
- Hardware associated with SGY has outdated drivers
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the SEG-Y Seismic Data File file
