Sources of SHR Problems

Frequent SHR Opening Issues

unshar Disappeared

When you double-click your SHR file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to unshar missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your SHR with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When another SHR application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

unshar Requires Update

Your Unix Shell Archive File file is incompatible with unshar because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of unshar from Open Source is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Right-clicking on your SHR, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Regardless, most of the SHR file opening problems relate to not having the right version of unshar installed.

Other SHR File Issues

Even with the correct version of unshar installed, you can still experience difficulties opening SHRs. Other SHR opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Other contributing causes:

  • SHR file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Deletion of the SHR file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the SHR format
  • Your SHR can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted SHR file can't be opened
  • Hardware associated with SHR has outdated drivers
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Unix Shell Archive File file successfully
