Understanding TXZ Issues

Frequent TXZ Opening Issues

7-Zip Removed

You attempt to load your TXZ file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The TXZ File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because 7-Zip isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your TXZ file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your TXZ file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Outdated 7-Zip

Your XZ Compressed Tar Archive file is incompatible with 7-Zip because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version 7-Zip (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your XZ Compressed Tar Archive file was probably created by a newer release of 7-Zip than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: If you right-click on your TXZ file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Regardless, most of the TXZ file opening problems relate to not having the right version of 7-Zip installed.

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of 7-Zip will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening TXZs. Issues that aren't software-related:

• TXZ file type Registry entries are wrong
• Unintentional removal of the description of the TXZ file inside the Windows Registry
• 7-Zip or another TXZ application experienced a flawed installation
• Your TXZ can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
• TXZ file integrity has been compromised by malware
• Device drivers for TXZ-related hardware are out-of-date
• Windows cannot load your XZ Compressed Tar Archive file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
