Understanding VDI Issues
Common Problems Opening VDI Files
Missing Oracle VM VirtualBox
Double-clicking your VDI file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open VDI File". When this happens, it is commonly due to Oracle VM VirtualBox missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your VDI because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another VDI-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Obsolete Version of Oracle VM VirtualBox
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Oracle VM VirtualBox installed that's incompatible with your VirtualBox Virtual Disk Image type. You will need to download a newer version of Oracle VM VirtualBox if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your VirtualBox Virtual Disk Image file was created by a different (newer) version of Oracle VM VirtualBox than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of VDI file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening VDI files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional VDI Opening Issues
Errors opening VirtualBox Virtual Disk Image files can still occur even with the latest Oracle VM VirtualBox software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening VDI files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for VDI are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the VDI file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the VDI format
- VDI file corruption
- Your VDI has adversely impacted by malware
- Drivers associated with VDI software need to be updated
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your VirtualBox Virtual Disk Image file successfully
