Troubleshooting Problems Opening VM Files

Common VM Opening Problems

Apache Velocity Disappeared

Double-clicking your VM file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open VM File". Usually, this is because you do not have Apache Velocity for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your VM with Apache Velocity, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your VM, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Incorrect Apache Velocity Version

It is possible that your version of Apache Velocity isn't able to open your Velocity Template file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Apache Velocity if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Velocity Template file was created by a different (newer) version of Apache Velocity than what's installed.

Tip: Investigate your VM file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening VM files are due to having the incorrect version of Apache Velocity installed on your computer.

Other VM File Issues

You can still experience errors opening VM files even with the latest version of Apache Velocity installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening VM files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:

  • Windows Registry VM file paths that are incorrect
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry VM description
  • Defective install of a VM program, such as Apache Velocity
  • VM file corruption
  • Malware-tainted VM file can't be opened
  • VM-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Velocity Template file successfully
