Troubleshooting Problems Opening VS Files

Issues Opening VS Files

Microsoft DirectX SDK Removed

When trying to open your VS file, you get the error "Can't Open VS File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft DirectX SDK installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the VS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens VS files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Incorrect Microsoft DirectX SDK Version

In other instances, your Vertex Shader File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft DirectX SDK. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft DirectX SDK (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Vertex Shader File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft DirectX SDK than you have on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your VS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft DirectX SDK version on your computer can cause problems opening VS files.

Other VS File Issues

Although you might already have Microsoft DirectX SDK or another VS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Vertex Shader File files. If you are still having problems opening VS files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • VS file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • The VS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Partial installation of Microsoft DirectX SDK that did not fully complete
  • Your VS file is corrupted (issues with your Vertex Shader File file itself)
  • Malware-tainted VS file can't be opened
  • Drivers associated with VS software need to be updated
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Vertex Shader File file
