Troubleshoot WOW Files
Issues Opening WOW Files
Missing OpenMPT
When trying to open your WOW file, you get the error "Can't Open WOW File Type". Customarily, this means that OpenMPT is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your WOW file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When another WOW application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Incorrect OpenMPT Version
In other instances, your Grave Composer Music Module file version may not be supported by your version of OpenMPT. Download the latest OpenMPT version from the Open Source website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Grave Composer Music Module file was created by a newer version of OpenMPT than you have on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the WOW file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening WOW files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other WOW File Issues
You can still experience errors opening WOW files even with the latest version of OpenMPT installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening WOW files. Additional factors include:
- Invalid WOW file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The WOW file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a WOW-associated program (eg. OpenMPT)
- File corruption affecting your WOW file
- Your WOW has adversely impacted by malware
- WOW-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows cannot load your Grave Composer Music Module file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
