Troubleshooting Problems Opening XHD Files

Common XHD Opening Problems

HappyFish is Not Installed

When trying to open your XHD file, you get the error "Can't Open XHD File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to HappyFish missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your XHD with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you don't have HappyFish installed, and you know of another program to open your XHD file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Outdated HappyFish

In other instances, your HappyFish XML Data File file version may not be supported by your version of HappyFish. Visit the Open Source website to download (or purchase) the latest version of HappyFish. Your HappyFish XML Data File file was probably created by a newer release of HappyFish than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: If you right-click on your XHD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening XHD files are due to having the wrong version of HappyFish installed.

Additional XHD Opening Issues

You can still experience errors opening XHD files even with the latest version of HappyFish installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening XHDs. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for XHD are wrong
  • Deletion of the XHD file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Corrupt install of HappyFish or other XHD-related program
  • Your XHD file is corrupted (issues with your HappyFish XML Data File file itself)
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your XHD
  • Device drivers for XHD-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your HappyFish XML Data File file successfully
