XIM Troubleshooting

Common Problems Opening XIM Files

XnView MP Disappeared

Double-clicking your XIM file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open XIM File". Usually, this is because you do not have XnView MP for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your XIM with XnView MP, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XIM, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Outdated XnView MP

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of XnView MP installed that's incompatible with your X11 Xim Toolkit Bitmap Format type. Download the latest XnView MP version from the XnSoft website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your X11 Xim Toolkit Bitmap Format file was created by a newer XnView MP than what you have installed.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the XIM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right XnView MP version on your computer can cause problems opening XIM files.

More Causes of Problems Opening XIMs

Assuming you have the right XnView MP version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening XIM files. If you're still experiencing problems opening XIM files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:

  • Invalid XIM file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • The XIM file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • XnView MP or another XIM application experienced a flawed installation
  • File corruption affecting your XIM file
  • Your XIM is infected with malware
  • XIM-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the X11 Xim Toolkit Bitmap Format format
