Troubleshooting Problems Opening XKM Files
Typical XKM Opening Challenges
Linux is Not Installed
When you double-click your XKM file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Linux for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your XKM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: Another XKM-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Obsolete Version of Linux
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Linux installed that's incompatible with your X KeyBoard File type. Installing the latest version of Linux from Open Source is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your X KeyBoard File file was created by a newer version of Linux than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of XKM file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the XKM file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Linux installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening XKMs
Although you might already have Linux or another XKM-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening X KeyBoard File files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening XKM files. Other contributing causes:
- XKM file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Accidental deletion of the description of the XKM file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a XKM program, such as Linux
- The XKM itself is corrupted
- XKM file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with XKM software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your X KeyBoard File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
