XQL Troubleshooting
Issues Opening XQL Files
Microsoft Notepad Isn't There
If you attempt to load your XQL file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open XQL Files". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Notepad isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your XQL with Microsoft Notepad, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XQL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Microsoft Notepad is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Notepad won't support your XML Query Language File file. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Notepad if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a XML Query Language File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the XQL file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening XQL files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening XQLs
Errors opening XML Query Language File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Notepad software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening XQL files. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid XQL file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry XQL description
- Microsoft Notepad or another XQL application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your XQL
- Past or present virus infection has affected your XQL
- XQL-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your XML Query Language File file
