XRF Troubleshooting
Frequent XRF Opening Issues
Cal3DViewer Disappeared
When you double-click your XRF file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Cal3DViewer for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your XRF with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another XRF application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Cal3DViewer is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Cal3D XML Materials File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Cal3DViewer if you don't have the right version. Your Cal3D XML Materials File file was probably created by a newer release of Cal3DViewer than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of XRF file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the XRF file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Cal3DViewer installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading XRF Files
Errors opening Cal3D XML Materials File files can still occur even with the latest Cal3DViewer software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading XRF files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Windows Registry XRF file paths that are incorrect
- Deletion of the XRF file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a XRF-associated program (eg. Cal3DViewer)
- Something has caused file corruption of your XRF
- Your XRF is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your XRF file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Cal3D XML Materials File file successfully
