XRL File Complications

Common Problems Opening XRL Files

Sybase PowerDesigner Isn't There

When trying to open your XRL file, you get the error "Can't Open XRL File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Sybase PowerDesigner for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your XRL file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Wrong Version of Sybase PowerDesigner is Installed

Sometimes your installed version of Sybase PowerDesigner won't support your PowerDesigner Report File file. Installing the latest version of Sybase PowerDesigner from SAP is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your PowerDesigner Report File file was created by a different (newer) version of Sybase PowerDesigner than what's installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your XRL, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening XRL files are due to having the wrong version of Sybase PowerDesigner installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading XRL Files

You can still experience errors opening XRL files even with the latest version of Sybase PowerDesigner installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading XRL files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for XRL
  • Deletion of the XRL file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of Sybase PowerDesigner that did not fully complete
  • The XRL itself is corrupted
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your XRL
  • Hardware associated with XRL has outdated drivers
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your PowerDesigner Report File file successfully
