Troubleshooting Problems Opening XS3 Files
Frequent XS3 Opening Issues
Xess Disappeared
If you attempt to load your XS3 file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open XS3 Files". Customarily, this means that Xess is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the XS3 file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens XS3 files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Xess Version
It is possible that your version of Xess isn't able to open your XESS Worksheet file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version Xess (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your XS3 file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening XS3 files are due to having the wrong version of Xess installed.
Other XS3 File Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Xess will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening XS3 files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid XS3 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the XS3 file inside the Windows Registry
- Partial installation of Xess that did not fully complete
- Your XS3 can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Malware-tainted XS3 file can't be opened
- Hardware associated with XS3 has outdated drivers
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your XESS Worksheet file successfully
