XS4 File Complications
Common XS4 Opening Problems
Missing Xess
When you double-click your XS4 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Xess isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your XS4 because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your XS4, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Xess Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Xess installed that's incompatible with your XESS Worksheet type. If you do not have the proper version Xess (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your XESS Worksheet file was created by a newer Xess than what you have installed.
Tip: Investigate your XS4 file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the XS4 file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Xess installed.
Other Causes of XS4 File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Xess will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening XS4 files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for XS4 are wrong
