Troubleshooting Problems Opening YUV Files

Frequent YUV Opening Issues

MPlayer Not Present

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open YUV Files" when trying to open your YUV. Usually, this is because you do not have MPlayer for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your YUV file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens YUV files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

MPlayer is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of MPlayer isn't able to open your YUV Video File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of MPlayer if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: If you right-click on your YUV file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Regardless, most of the YUV file opening problems relate to not having the right version of MPlayer installed.

Other YUV File Issues

Even with the correct version of MPlayer installed, you can still experience difficulties opening YUVs. If you're still experiencing problems opening YUV files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for YUV
  • Deletion of the YUV file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of MPlayer that did not fully complete
  • Your YUV file is corrupted (issues with your YUV Video File file itself)
  • Your YUV has adversely impacted by malware
  • Drivers associated with YUV software need to be updated
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your YUV Video File file
