Troubleshooting Problems Opening DVF Files
Frequent DVF Opening Issues
Microsoft Windows Media Player Disappeared
If you attempt to load your DVF file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open DVF Files". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Windows Media Player is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your DVF file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Windows Media Player installed, and you know of another program to open your DVF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Windows Media Player is Out-of-Date
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Windows Media Player isn't able to open your Sony Digital Voice File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows Media Player if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Sony Digital Voice File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows Media Player than you have on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the DVF file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the DVF file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Windows Media Player installed.
Additional DVF Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Windows Media Player installed, you can still experience difficulties opening DVFs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DVFs. Additional factors include:
- Invalid DVF file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the DVF file description from the Registry by mistake
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the DVF format
- Your DVF can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your DVF
- Hardware related to DVFs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Sony Digital Voice File file successfully
