Troubleshoot ECS Files
Common ECS Opening Problems
WinRAR Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ECS Files" when trying to open your ECS. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have WinRAR for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your ECS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another ECS application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Obsolete Version of WinRAR
Your Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone Backup File file is incompatible with WinRAR because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of WinRAR if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone Backup File file version that was created by a newer version of WinRAR than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your ECS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of ECS file opening issues are due to not having the correct WinRAR version installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading ECS Files
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of WinRAR will resolve your issue. Other ECS opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid ECS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The ECS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Defective install of a ECS program, such as WinRAR
- Your ECS file is corrupted (issues with your Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone Backup File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your ECS
- Hardware related to ECSs has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone Backup File file
