Troubleshooting Problems Opening ELF Files

Frequent ELF Opening Issues

Dolphin (emulator) Disappeared

When you double-click your ELF file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Dolphin (emulator) installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your ELF because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens ELF files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Wrong Version of Dolphin (emulator) is Installed

Your Nintendo Wii Game File file is incompatible with Dolphin (emulator) because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version Dolphin (emulator) (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Nintendo Wii Game File file was created by a different (newer) version of Dolphin (emulator) than what's installed.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your ELF file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: Not having the right Dolphin (emulator) version on your computer can cause problems opening ELF files.

Other ELF File Opening Causes

Errors opening Nintendo Wii Game File files can still occur even with the latest Dolphin (emulator) software installed on your computer. Other ELF opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:

  • Windows Registry ELF file paths that are incorrect
  • Corruption of the ELF file description inside the Registry
  • Invalid installation of a ELF-associated program (eg. Dolphin (emulator))
  • Your ELF file is corrupted (issues with your Nintendo Wii Game File file itself)
  • The ELF is infected with a virus
  • Drivers associated with ELF software need to be updated
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Nintendo Wii Game File file

Poll: Do you use a computer or mobile device more often to view files?
