Troubleshoot FTF Files
Common FTF Opening Problems
Google Android Removed
Double-clicking your FTF file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open FTF File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Google Android for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the FTF file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another FTF application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Google Android Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Google Android installed that's incompatible with your Sony Ericsson Xperia Android Firmware type. Download the latest Google Android version from the Google website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: If you right-click on your FTF file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening FTF files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other FTF File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Google Android will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening FTF files. Additional factors include:
- Invalid FTF file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry FTF description
- Partial installation of Google Android that did not fully complete
- The FTF itself is corrupted
- Your FTF is infected with malware
- Hardware related to FTFs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Sony Ericsson Xperia Android Firmware file successfully
