Sources of IND Problems
Typical IND Opening Challenges
Missing QuarkXPress
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open IND Files" when trying to open your IND. If so, it typically means that you don't have QuarkXPress installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your IND file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens IND files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
QuarkXPress is Out-of-Date
Your Adobe InDesign Document file is incompatible with QuarkXPress because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of QuarkXPress if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Adobe InDesign Document file was created by a newer version of QuarkXPress than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your IND file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening IND files are due to having the incorrect version of QuarkXPress installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening INDs
You can still experience errors opening IND files even with the latest version of QuarkXPress installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening IND files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for IND
- The IND file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a IND-associated program (eg. QuarkXPress)
- Something has caused file corruption of your IND
- IND file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for IND-related hardware are out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Adobe InDesign Document files
