MVC Troubleshooting

Issues Opening MVC Files

Movie Collector Disappeared

Double-clicking your MVC file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open MVC File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Movie Collector for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your MVC file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another MVC-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Outdated Movie Collector

It is possible that your version of Movie Collector isn't able to open your Movie Collector Catalog file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Movie Collector from Collectorz.com is recommended. Most of the time your Movie Collector Catalog file was created by a newer Movie Collector than what you have installed.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your MVC file and clicking "Properties".

Regardless, most of the MVC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Movie Collector installed.

Other MVC File Issues

Assuming you have the right Movie Collector version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening MVC files. If you are still having problems opening MVC files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • MVC file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the MVC file in the Windows registry
  • Partial installation of Movie Collector that did not fully complete
  • Your MVC file is corrupted (issues with your Movie Collector Catalog file itself)
  • MVC file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your MVC file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Movie Collector Catalog file successfully
