Troubleshooting Problems Opening XA Files
Frequent XA Opening Issues
Electronic Arts SimCity 4 Disappeared
When trying to open your XA file, you get the error "Can't Open XA File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Electronic Arts SimCity 4 missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the XA file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your XA file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Wrong Version of Electronic Arts SimCity 4 is Installed
In other instances, your The Sims Audio File file version may not be supported by your version of Electronic Arts SimCity 4. Visit the Electronic Arts website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Electronic Arts SimCity 4. Your The Sims Audio File file was probably created by a newer release of Electronic Arts SimCity 4 than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your XA file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening XA files are due to having the wrong version of Electronic Arts SimCity 4 installed.
Additional XA Opening Issues
Errors opening The Sims Audio File files can still occur even with the latest Electronic Arts SimCity 4 software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening XA files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for XA
- The XA file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the XA format
- Something has caused file corruption of your XA
- Past or present virus infection has affected your XA
- Drivers associated with XA software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open The Sims Audio File files
