ZAR File Complications

Frequent ZAR Opening Issues

PlayStation 2 Removed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ZAR Files" when trying to open your ZAR. Customarily, this means that PlayStation 2 is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your ZAR file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your ZAR file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

PlayStation 2 Requires Update

It is possible that your version of PlayStation 2 isn't able to open your PlayStation 2 Audio Data file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of PlayStation 2 from Sony is recommended. Your PlayStation 2 Audio Data file was probably created by a newer release of PlayStation 2 than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your ZAR, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ZAR files are due to having the wrong version of PlayStation 2 installed.

Additional ZAR Opening Issues

Even with the correct version of PlayStation 2 installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ZARs. If you are still having problems opening ZAR files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for ZAR
  • Deletion of the ZAR file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Corrupt install of PlayStation 2 or other ZAR-related program
  • Your ZAR file is corrupted (issues with your PlayStation 2 Audio Data file itself)
  • ZAR file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • ZAR-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the PlayStation 2 Audio Data file
