Common MA Opening Problems

Autodesk Maya Disappeared

When you double-click your MA file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Autodesk Maya for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When another MA application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Outdated Autodesk Maya

Sometimes your installed version of Autodesk Maya won't support your Maya Project File file. Download the latest Autodesk Maya version from the Autodesk, Inc. website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your Maya Project File file was probably created by a newer release of Autodesk Maya than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your MA file and clicking "Properties".

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening MA files are due to having the wrong version of Autodesk Maya installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening MAs

Even with the correct version of Autodesk Maya installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MAs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MA files. Issues that aren't software-related:

• Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for MA
• Deletion of the MA file description from the Registry by mistake
• Corrupt install of Autodesk Maya or other MA-related program
• MA file corruption
• Your MA is infected with malware
• MA-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
• Windows cannot load your Maya Project File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
