MID Troubleshooting

Common Problems Opening MID Files

Microsoft Windows Media Player is Not Installed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MID Files" when trying to open your MID. Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Windows Media Player for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens MID files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Windows Media Player

It is possible that your version of Microsoft Windows Media Player isn't able to open your MIDI Audio File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows Media Player if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your MIDI Audio File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Windows Media Player than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of MID file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the MID file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Windows Media Player installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening MIDs

Although you might already have Microsoft Windows Media Player or another MID-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening MIDI Audio File files. Other MID opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:

  • Windows Registry MID file paths that are incorrect
  • Corruption of the MID file description inside the Registry
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player or another MID application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your MID file is corrupted (issues with your MIDI Audio File file itself)
  • The MID is infected with a virus
  • Hardware related to MIDs has device driver corruption
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the MIDI Audio File file
