Sources of DOT Problems

Issues Opening DOT Files

Apache OpenOffice is Not Installed

When you double-click your DOT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Apache OpenOffice for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your DOT, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Apache OpenOffice is Out-of-Date

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Apache OpenOffice installed that's incompatible with your Word Document Template type. If you've got the wrong version of Apache OpenOffice installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Word Document Template file was probably created by a newer release of Apache OpenOffice than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: If you right-click on your DOT file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Apache OpenOffice version on your computer can cause problems opening DOT files.

Other DOT File Opening Causes

Even with the correct version of Apache OpenOffice installed, you can still experience difficulties opening DOTs. If you're still experiencing problems opening DOT files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • DOT file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Corruption of the DOT file description inside the Registry
  • Defective install of a DOT program, such as Apache OpenOffice
  • Your DOT can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • DOT file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Hardware related to DOTs has device driver corruption
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Word Document Template format
