OXPS Troubleshooting
Common OXPS Opening Problems
Missing Microsoft XPS Viewer
When you double-click your OXPS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft XPS Viewer isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your OXPS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: Another OXPS-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft XPS Viewer is Out-of-Date
Your OpenXPS File file is incompatible with Microsoft XPS Viewer because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft XPS Viewer. This issue mainly occurs when your OpenXPS File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft XPS Viewer than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your OXPS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft XPS Viewer version on your computer can cause problems opening OXPS files.
Associated Difficulties Loading OXPS Files
Errors opening OpenXPS File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft XPS Viewer software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening OXPS files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- OXPS file type Registry entries are wrong
- The OXPS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Microsoft XPS Viewer or another OXPS application experienced a flawed installation
- Your OXPS file is corrupted (issues with your OpenXPS File file itself)
- The OXPS is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for OXPS-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your OpenXPS File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
