InfoNotary e-Doc Signer Not Present
You attempt to load your P7M file and get an error such as "- Can't Open The P7M File Extension". Customarily, this means that InfoNotary e-Doc Signer is not installed on - . The OS won't know what to do with your P7M file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: Another P7M-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect InfoNotary e-Doc Signer Version
In other instances, your S/MIME Digitally Encrypted Message file version may not be supported by your version of InfoNotary e-Doc Signer. If you do not have the proper version InfoNotary e-Doc Signer (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Right-clicking on your P7M, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening P7M files are due to having the wrong version of InfoNotary e-Doc Signer installed.
Other Causes of P7M File Opening Problems
Although you might already have InfoNotary e-Doc Signer or another P7M-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening S/MIME Digitally Encrypted Message files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading P7M files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for P7M
- Deletion of the P7M file description from the Registry by mistake
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the P7M format
- Your P7M file is corrupted (issues with your S/MIME Digitally Encrypted Message file itself)
- Malware-tainted P7M file can't be opened
- Device drivers for P7M-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your S/MIME Digitally Encrypted Message file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
