CRL Troubleshooting

Common Problems Opening CRL Files

OpenSSL Removed

When trying to open your CRL file, you get the error "Can't Open CRL File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because OpenSSL isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your CRL file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your CRL file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Obsolete Version of OpenSSL

In other instances, your Certificate Revocation List File file version may not be supported by your version of OpenSSL. Installing the latest version of OpenSSL from Open Source is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Certificate Revocation List File file was created by a different (newer) version of OpenSSL than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of CRL file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the CRL file opening problems relate to not having the right version of OpenSSL installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading CRL Files

You can still experience errors opening CRL files even with the latest version of OpenSSL installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening CRLs. Other contributing causes:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for CRL
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the CRL file inside the Windows Registry
  • Partial installation of OpenSSL that did not fully complete
  • Your CRL file is corrupted (issues with your Certificate Revocation List File file itself)
  • Your CRL has adversely impacted by malware
  • Drivers associated with CRL software need to be updated
  • Windows cannot load your Certificate Revocation List File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
