PPS Troubleshooting

Issues Opening PPS Files

Apache OpenOffice Not Present

You attempt to load your PPS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PPS File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Apache OpenOffice missing in %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your PPS with Apache OpenOffice, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When another PPS application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Wrong Version of Apache OpenOffice is Installed

Your PowerPoint Slide Show file is incompatible with Apache OpenOffice because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Apache OpenOffice if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: If you right-click on your PPS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PPS files are due to having the wrong version of Apache OpenOffice installed.

Other PPS File Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Apache OpenOffice will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening PPS files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • PPS file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the PPS file inside the Windows Registry
  • Invalid installation of a PPS-associated program (eg. Apache OpenOffice)
  • The PPS itself is corrupted
  • The PPS is infected with a virus
  • Hardware associated with PPS has outdated drivers
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your PowerPoint Slide Show file successfully

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
