CW File Complications
Common Problems Opening CW Files
CardWorks Removed
Double-clicking your CW file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open CW File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have CardWorks for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your CW file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have CardWorks installed, and you know of another program to open your CW file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
CardWorks Requires Update
It is possible that your version of CardWorks isn't able to open your CardWorks Template file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of CardWorks if you don't have the right version. Your CardWorks Template file was probably created by a newer release of CardWorks than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your CW file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CW files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading CW Files
You can still experience errors opening CW files even with the latest version of CardWorks installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading CW files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for CW are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the CW file inside the Windows Registry
- Defective install of a CW program, such as CardWorks
- Your CW can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- CW file integrity has been compromised by malware
- CW-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open CardWorks Template files
