RAR File Complications
Issues Opening RAR Files
7-Zip is Not Installed
Double-clicking your RAR file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open RAR File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have 7-Zip for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your RAR file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: Another RAR-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect 7-Zip Version
In other instances, your WinRAR Compressed Archive file version may not be supported by your version of 7-Zip. If you do not have the proper version 7-Zip (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your WinRAR Compressed Archive file was created by a different (newer) version of 7-Zip than what's installed.
Tip: Investigate your RAR file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening RAR files are due to having the wrong version of 7-Zip installed.
Additional RAR Opening Issues
Errors opening WinRAR Compressed Archive files can still occur even with the latest 7-Zip software installed on your computer. Other RAR opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Other contributing causes:
- Windows Registry RAR file paths that are incorrect
- Unintentional removal of the description of the RAR file inside the Windows Registry
- 7-Zip or another RAR application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your RAR
- Your RAR is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with RAR software need to be updated
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the WinRAR Compressed Archive file
