Frequent RIF Opening Issues

Corel Painter Isn't There

Double-clicking your RIF file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open RIF File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Corel Painter for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your RIF with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your RIF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Corel Painter is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of Corel Painter isn't able to open your Painter Raster Image file due to incompatibility. Visit the Corel website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Corel Painter. The primary cause of this problem is that your Painter Raster Image file was created by a different (newer) version of Corel Painter than what's installed.

Tip: Investigate your RIF file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Corel Painter version on your computer can cause problems opening RIF files.

Other Causes of RIF File Opening Problems

You can still experience errors opening RIF files even with the latest version of Corel Painter installed on your PC. Other RIF opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:

• Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for RIF
• Deletion of the RIF file description from the Registry by mistake
• Corel Painter or another RIF application experienced a flawed installation
• Your RIF can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
