RS Troubleshooting

Common RS Opening Problems

XnView MP Isn't There

When trying to open your RS file, you get the error "Can't Open RS File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because XnView MP isn't installed on your PC. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the RS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you don't have XnView MP installed, and you know of another program to open your RS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

XnView MP is Out-of-Date

Your Sun Raster Bitmap Image file is incompatible with XnView MP because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version XnView MP (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Sun Raster Bitmap Image file was created by a different (newer) version of XnView MP than what's installed.

Tip: Investigate your RS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the RS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of XnView MP installed.

Other RS File Issues

Assuming you have the right XnView MP version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening RS files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading RS files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Windows Registry RS file paths that are incorrect
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry RS description
  • Invalid installation of a RS-associated program (eg. XnView MP)
  • Your RS file is corrupted (issues with your Sun Raster Bitmap Image file itself)
  • The RS is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your RS file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Sun Raster Bitmap Image files
