Troubleshoot BCK Files

Troubles Opening BCK Files

OpenVMS Removed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open BCK Files" when trying to open your BCK. When this happens, it is commonly due to OpenVMS missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your BCK with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens BCK files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Obsolete Version of OpenVMS

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a VMX Backup File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of OpenVMS if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of BCK file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Primarily, problems experienced when opening BCK files are due to having the incorrect version of OpenVMS installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening BCKs

Even with the correct version of OpenVMS installed, you can still experience difficulties opening BCKs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening BCKs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • File references in the Windows Registry for BCK are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the BCK file in the Windows registry
  • Defective install of a BCK program, such as OpenVMS
  • Your BCK can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • The BCK is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers for BCK-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your VMX Backup File file
