SMS File Complications
Common SMS Opening Problems
Missing Kega Fusion
When you double-click your SMS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Kega Fusion installed for %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When another SMS application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Wrong Version of Kega Fusion is Installed
Your Sega Master System ROM file is incompatible with Kega Fusion because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Kega Fusion if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your Sega Master System ROM file was created by a newer Kega Fusion than what you have installed.
Tip: Investigate your SMS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening SMS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other SMS File Issues
Although you might already have Kega Fusion or another SMS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Sega Master System ROM files. If you're still experiencing problems opening SMS files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:
- File references in the Windows Registry for SMS are wrong
- Corruption of the SMS file description inside the Registry
- Kega Fusion or another SMS application experienced a flawed installation
- File corruption affecting your SMS file
- Past or present virus infection has affected your SMS
- Device drivers for SMS-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Sega Master System ROM file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
